[Who We Are Title]

Counterbalance Loom

Several years ago, Deb and I purchased this loom from Riki Darling. That was sometime in the 1990s I think. Since that time, it pretty much stayed disassembled while we moved from Herriman to Kamas and then I moved it to Heber City. We did assemble it in Herriman, but it hasn't been put together since. Until now.

Between times, I disassembled parts of it, and with the help of my great friend Gordon, started stripping off the old, ugly brown finish. We made a replacement support for the treadle pivot and also glued and pinned several of the weak joints. In this picture, you can see that the treadles, the treadle support beam, and the low bar and uprights of the batten have new finish. The frame, the batten pivot and the bar above the reed have been sanded and need to be finished. All other parts are as they were when we purchased the loom.

I spent today (2009 Sept 18) reorganizing my fiber storage room, where the loom was stored. Because I plan to complete its restoration this winter, I needed to move it out from behind the piles of fiber. Today seemed as good as any to reassemble it to see if I'm missing any parts. So far, the only missing parts are a couple of dowels that hold the batten in the proper vertical position, and one of the sticks that make up one of the shafts.

Because of the missing harness stick, I didn't assemble the other three shafts. The lams aren't shown because I would have needed to screw their mounting bracket to the frame.
